home sounds a lot like rain
A spent a lot of time during the making of this work thinking about how we become certain of the structure of space. I’d been reading Henri Poincare’s work Science and Hypothesis and was intrigued by how he tried to experimentally verify the axioms of geometry.
This lead me down a thought process of what defines the space of memories, where the primary sense of the space, sight, usually takes a back seat. I wanted to create a work that while triggering sensations of belonging and home through visual queues, would be completed through a soundscape which created the surface in which the viewer engaged with it. The tapping of solenoids on the surface of the wood vibrated the structure itself, as well as creating a sound form of breathing.
For me the structure recalls memories I have when I was young, playing in the woods with my sister. We grew up in the pacific northwest and it was common for rain to fall atop the tree canopy above us, which would lead to moments of quiet between play, before heading home, where the sound of raindrops shook the world around us.
